The future of Digital work
courtesy;https://www.google.com.au/search?Accessible to new media technologies and communication infrastructures have changed our work environment and the way we conduct our business in a different ways than we would do in traditional settings.
As Virginai Llyod mentioned, available of online tools such as Skype, freelancers and professionals can work from a particular location for people living in another country. This gives freelancers (especially writers) the options to work for different organizations.
While some People credit digital technologies, internet connectivity and social media for the efficiency and productivity of an individual or organization, there are people who are of the view that working from home may affect the team from performing effectively.
A friend of my cousin who owns a small modeling company in Melbourne works 3 days a week from home and 2 days from the office His clients are mostly young and media savvy, which makes it convenient for both parties to communicate via email and instagram, facebook and other social media platforms.
He is of the view that mobile data connectivity enables him to work on the train or while on tour abroad. Teleworking actually sets him free form the traditional 9–5 working hours which normally confines him in the four walls of his office. He says most small and private businesses have conveniently been using teleworking to function efficiently and productively. Thus, creating a work life balance for people running their own business.
While progression in digital technology and rise of social media results in creating a flexible and convenient working environment, however, it is not free of the negative impact internet and technologies bring about in the management of an individual or an organization.
As economists claim rise in digital and new media technologies may lead to polarization of labor forces, which is, already taking place transforming the ways organizations operates and how they deal with their customers. One such example of automation could be seen in a library. Librarians do not have to assist people in borrowing books and materials form the library. Once we have the membership card we can borrow books and other materials by using the computers in the library. Similarly, research found out that due to availability of facilities such as ATMs and mobile banking, the number of cashiers at the teller counters have declined over the years. There could be such more cases, which we are not aware of.
While some jobs seem to be disappearing due to automation, the new media technologies and rise in social media have opened up new opportunities requiring social media expertise. Every business now has their own social media profile and websites requiring people with social media background to maintain and update their online profiles.
The current trend in telework and private businesses interest in teleworking shows that jobs relating to social and online media may be on the rise.
