“Everything is fast-paced and it’s exciting.”
“…it’s a great opportunity to move product quickly. Especially if you want to grow a business.”
“So I have an assistant that helps me whenever we put new items up. She puts them up. I give her all the info start bid, shipping cost, etc. and then I have her take care of the rest.”
Piatella’s sales in their first 6 months selling on Tophatter. How did you find out about Tophatter?
I was growing a couple of different sites and it randomly came up with advertising. Figured I might as well try it out. I’m always looking for new opportunities.
What was your biggest fear or thought before starting a Trial with Tophatter?
Possibly losing money [laughs]. When you look at it on the whole, now I’m making a profit or at worst breaking even on small items. That was my fear at the beginning — that I would be losing money and it wouldn’t be worthwhile for my business. That was my main concern.
One of Piatella’s best selling items is a 3-pack tennis bracelet, ring, and hoop earring set. What, specifically, has been your favorite part of starting to sell with Tophatter?
Well it’s exciting! Just in the beginning it was exciting seeing all of the live auctions and how prices went up. Everything is fast-paced and it’s exciting.
What’re your top 2 tips for being successful as a seller on Tophatter?
1. You have to put value items up.
2. And I’d say you have to manage it constantly.
You can’t let it run by itself. You need to constantly manage it. You have to treat it like a business. You can’t put items up for two weeks and see what happens. It’s a day-by-day thing. You wouldn’t manage a business by letting it loose for two weeks and then checking up on it.
Customer feedback on Piatella’s items. How exactly do you and your team manage the Tophatter platform?
So I have an assistant that helps me whenever we put new items up. She puts them up. I give her all the info start bid, shipping cost, etc. and then I have her take care of the rest. I myself also look at it daily. It’s always good to see what’s sold. What didn’t sell. See if it was a one time thing if an item didn’t sell. If it didn’t sell a lot, I take the item off. I’m constantly managing our inventory. For me it’s pretty hands on.
What’s the key to deciding what ‘Desired Volume’ to sell on Tophatter?
Well we’re a business. We’re not selling out of a house. We’re a real business. We have a few hundred, maybe a million pieces in stock. We’re always selling stock everyday. I like moving stock. It’s the business we’re in. So I have the goods. I know I have them. Basically I have the goods to support the volume, so that when we get there we can handle ourselves.
If you were to recommend Tophatter to another business, what would you tell them?
I’d tell them it’s a great opportunity to move product quickly. Especially if you want to grow a business. You can do it slowly by desired volume and if you like what you see you can up your desired volume and grow even faster. Great for growing or starting a business.
If you had to sum up Tophatter in 1–2 words what would they be?
Pretty awesome! Seriously.
